The International Year of Architecture, the Ministry of Culture and the Order of Architects promoted the opening of a competition for the design of this building. The then Portuguese Institute of Archaeology, in collaboration with the Architects, launched the public tender for the design work and drafting of which was designated then "Museum of Art and Archaeology of the Côa Valley." The first prize was awarded to the team of Architects Pedro Tiago Pimentel Camilo Rebelo and, of Porto. The museum is built result of the development of the winning proposal: the building design and the exhibition project. "The evolution of the body of the museum - while metamorphic prosthesis - is based on a single assumption in the landscape. In this sense it is both a strong and affirmative gesture, but also subtle, sensitive to the topography and dialogue with the landscape that receives it. " The building consists of four floors, roof / floor 2, Level 1, Level 0 and 1 Floor-organized by a particular system of vertical and horizontal circulations The cover meets pedestrian circulation and access to the museum tracks for parking of vehicles. Also incorporates scenic areas. Two lifts and a staircase create a direct connection to the museum entrance lobby. The Level 0, where the museum's permanent exhibition and temporary exhibition halls are located, is structured by the ramp / hallway that runs through the body.
